THE FANTASTICAL REALM - FAIRIES / FAERIES / FAYS
Posted on September 06 2016
Fairies are known by many synonyms and euphemisms such as, the Little People, the Fair Folk, the Green Men and the Lordy Ones to name a few.
They are rumoured to have originated in Italy where they are known as Fatae and to have spread along with the Roman emigrants during the expansion of the Roman Empire.
In the UK the fairies live everywhere except Cornwall, Devon and Somerset where they were driven out by the original inhabitants, the Pixies.
Contrary to popular belief fairies are not invisible it is simply that humans are usually unable to see them clearly. This is unless they own a self-bored stone, i.e. a stone in which a hole has been created by the tumbling waters of a river. If a human has such a stone they can hold it to their eye and see the fairies distinctly.
It is also believed that fairies visit the households where a new baby has been born and if the relatives of the child are kind to the fairies they will bestow gifts such as beauty, tranquility and loving kindness.
